In West Africa, the name Egusi is applied to members of the gourd family having seeds of high oil content. The Egusi melons are a subspecies of the watermelon species. Both egusi and the watermelon are of tropical African origin.

Egusi soup is perhaps the most eaten soup in Southern Nigeria, and egusi is the main ingredient used.
